Don't use a
Screwdriver as a Hammer!
Most of us have been
in a situation where we needed a hammer, didn't have it, and
used a screw driver to get the job done. Only to find
out that upon completing the project either the screwdriver
was severely damaged or the nail was in crooked.
The moral of this story is that organizations should take a
"tool box" approach to Courseware Authoring and eLearning
Development tools because there isn't a single tool for all
needs.
Every Tool Box should have a multi-purpose tool like a Swiss
Army Knife, you know the one that has a wide array of tools
all built into one! In the eLearning development space
the Swiss Army Knife of development tools is a product named
THESIS. THESIS can convert any web presentable content
to SCORM, Package multiple SCORM objects, create SCORM
assessments, and it provides a plug-in wizard for Microsoft
Office applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. to
save the particular Office file as a SCORM object.
THESIS is not going to sing and dance, it doesn't make
instructional designers better, it doesn't ensure that all
learners receive the highest grade however it does
1) Save time in
creating SCORM eLearning objects
2) Increases
utilization of existing technology investments
3) Streamlines
content collaboration among subject matter experts and
instructional designers
4) Provides a broader
range of content contributors and
5) Increases
productivity based upon existing knowledge of MS Office
Applications.
Lastly and most importantly, regardless of the tool, the
priority should be on learning and not the technology.
